One of the biggest problems in life is that we are conditioned to believe that age and/or success alleviates our need for assistance from others. When we are young, we depend on guidance from parents, teachers, coaches, etc., but through that process, and the development & promotion of independence, we grow to assume that once we get older (and are ready to be off on our own), we should be equipped to manage all that life throws at us...and the those who can't are "weak," or that we may disappoint those mentors who invested in us. So, we tend to conceal our weaknesses, display our strengths, and often struggle in silence.
The problem is then coupled by the nature of counseling, as being an intervention model that is typically sought after someone finds themselves in trouble. We should not need to wait until we are in the midst a crisis or a diagnosable disorder in order to get some help with managing our worlds.
